German goes six scoreless in Class A playoff game

Right-hander Domingo German, the Marlins' No. 11 prospect, threw six scoreless innings Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to lead Class A Greensboro to a victory in Game 1 of its South Atlantic League semifinal series against Hagerstown. The Suns scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come back for a 3-2 victory.

German struck out seven batters, walked one and scattered four hits. He has now thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to Aug. 23.

The Grasshoppers appeared to be on their way to winning the first game of the series until the Suns came back in the ninth against right-hander Tyler Bremer, who was acquired from the Cubs last month in the Jacob Turner deal. The 24-year-old Bremer has saved 22 games in his three-year Minor League career, but the Suns rallied against him with an error, a walk and two hits.

The loss spoiled what was German's longest start since July 2, as the Marlins have carefully monitored his workload in the second half. The 21-year-old threw 123 1/3 innings during the regular season, a significant increase from the 67 he threw in 2013.

German went 9-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 25 starts this season. He struck out 113 batters and walked 25. He earned a spot on the World roster in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and ranked second in the South Atlantic League in ERA and third in WHIP (1.14).

After a travel day, the best-of-three series moves to Greensboro for Game 2 on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. If necessary, Game 3 would be played Saturday at 7 p.m.
