ST. LOUIS -- A short crew-chief review ensued at Busch Stadium on Friday when Matt Carpenter attempted to break a scoreless game in the sixth inning of the Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Marlins.

Carpenter sent a 2-2 fastball from Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi deep to right-center, hitting it off the top of the outfield wall. Umpires immediately ruled the ball in play, and Carpenter halted at second.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny briefly emerged from the dugout before a crew-chief review was initiated to see if Carpenter's hit cleared the fence to break the scoreless tie.

"It did look to me like it could have hit the top of the fence, and then there's the bushes and the railing there," Matheny said. "It all happened so fast. I know they want to get that call right, we want them to get it right, so we go out and the umpires take their chance to take a look at it."

It took only 53 seconds to confirm the call, keeping Carpenter at second with a double. He ended up scoring on an Eovaldi wild pitch to open a three-run sixth inning.

Matheny would end up challenging a play of his own in the ninth as a three-run lead began to slip away. With the bases loaded, the Marlins' Christian Yelich hit a single off a sliding left fielder Matt Holliday's glove, and there was confusion on the basepaths.

Matheny challenged that Reed Johnson had passed Donovan Solano on the basepaths, which would have given the Cardinals the first out of the inning. The call on the field was confirmed, however, sending Matheny to 2-11 on challenges this season and keeping the bases loaded.

The Marlins would plate a second run before the Cardinals secured the victory.
