It's another frustrating setback for the veteran infielder, who missed the first two months of the season with hamstring and groin injuries; manager Mike Redmond hinted during a pregame meeting with the media on Sunday that Furcal could be looking at another lengthy stint on the DL.
"It's going to be a while for him. It looks like it could be an extensive thing," Redmond said before the finale of the four-game series against the division-rival Mets at Marlins Park.
The starting lineup, particularly up the middle defensively, had a distinctively different look on Sunday. Dietrich, who arrived from New Orleans early in the morning, started at second and was batting seventh. Ed Lucas started his second consecutive game at shortstop in place of the injured Adeiny Hechavarria, but was moved up to the second spot in the order.
Redmond said that Hechavarria, who was scratched before Saturday's game with a sore right elbow, might be available if needed on Sunday.
"He's better today, but we figured we'd give him another day to make sure he's fully recovered," Redmond said.
