Following the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the teams will kick off a new soccer season in every corner of the globe. As in 2013, Europe's top soccer champions will cross the Atlantic Ocean to challenge their American counterparts in this unique competition that, rather than establishing a championship team, confirms a winning continent. The event's new format was announced at The Vicente Calderón Stadium (Madrid, Spain) and is organized by DIRECTV, the leading pay TV provider operating in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.
"The COPA EUROAMERICANA is a unique opportunity for American fans to follow the world's best teams in a competition against their local representatives," said Alfonso Noaín, Director of DIRECTV Sports Marketing for DIRECTV PanAmericana. "In celebration of last year's success, we will integrate new countries this year, giving them the opportunity to directly experience playing for the tournament."
Atlético Nacional from Colombia is not only the first Colombian soccer team to win a Copa Libertadores, but also counts with the most international titles of any soccer club in the country. It is the current leader in the Liga Postobon, and has won 13 national leagues.
AS Monaco, on the other hand, is one of the most important French soccer clubs, seven time winners of the Championship. The Club finished in second place in the League 1 for the 2013-2014 season and has already qualified for the UEFA Champions League 2014-2015. The team fields a variety of international stars, including Radamel Falcao and James Rodríguez, two renowned Colombian players.
COPA EUROAMERICANA consists of nine "all or nothing" games, with winners determined by penalties in case of any ties. The winner of each match will be awarded one point for their continent. The continent earning the highest number of points will emerge from the tournament as the champion. This year's exciting tournament is scheduled to take place in the Americas, beginning July 20 and ending August 2, 2014.
Tickets will be going on sale to the general public on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased online at marlins.com/soccer, by telephone at 1-800-967-9393 or at Marlins Park, North Ticket Windows.
