Marlins claim Paredes off waivers from Astros

MIAMI -- Speed and versatility are on the Marlins' shopping list, and the club took a step in addressing those areas on Monday afternoon, claiming utility player Jimmy Paredes off waivers from the Astros. The move gives the club 33 players on its 40-man roster.

Paredes, who turns 25 this month, has played second and third base, as well as all three outfield positions. He projects to compete for a utility spot.

A switch-hitter, Paredes appeared in 48 games for Houston in 2013 and batted .192 in 125 at-bats. At Triple-A Oklahoma City, he batted .287 with 21 doubles, six triples, eight home runs and 37 RBIs. Paredes had 16 stolen bases at the Minor League level, and four with the Astros.

In the Minors in 2012, Paredes swiped 37 bases and batted .318.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Paredes is a .289 career hitter with 166 stolen bases in 601 games. He has spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues with the Astros, batting .234 in 118 games (367 at-bats).
