Annual 'LoMo Camp for a Cure' has new home

|
MIAMI -- The venue has changed, but the cause remains the same.

Marlins first baseman Logan Morrison's annual "LoMo Camp for a Cure," is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Elev8 Sports Institute in Delray Beach, Fla. The complex was formerly the Bucky Dent Baseball School, and the camp is for baseball players ages 7-18.

The camp, which benefits the American Lung Association, previously was conducted at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla.

One of the reasons for the switch was Elev8 has its own instructors, who will work along with Marlins players and officials.

Juan Pierre, Jeff Conine, Christian Yelich and Justin Nicolino are expected to be among the representatives from the club who will offer instruction.

"I want it where kids can say, 'I met Juan Pierre and Jeff Conine,'" Morrison said. "Those are the things that last a lifetime."

Close to 100 have already enrolled in the camp, and the hope is to reach about 150. Details can be found at www.lomo4lungs.org.

"As long as the kids are having fun, we'll have as many kids as possible," Morrison said. "I don't want it to get too big, where kids don't get to mingle with the guys and get anything personal out of this.

"I think for two days you can get a lot of good personal experiences out of that. I think that's what it's all about."

For years, Morrison has actively championed the cause to raise awareness for lung cancer. The disease claimed the life of his father, Tom, in 2010.

"First-hand experience is always a life-changer, coming from first-hand experience, like I have," Morrison said. "If my dad didn't go through what he had gone through, I wouldn't probably be doing what I'm doing now.

"I think everything happens for a reason. I'm glad to help out the Lung Association. I'm looking forward to seeing the kids smile and have a good time."
